Swiss

In a Swiss stage, nobody is knocked out and nobody plays everyone. Each round, you are paired with someone who has a similar record. After a few rounds, the table sorts itself out.

When to use it

  • You have too many participants for a full round robin, but you want everyone to keep playing.
  • You want to avoid early eliminations and one-match upsets deciding the event.
  • You can run a handful of rounds. The default is log2 of the field, rounded up: 3 rounds for 8 participants, 4 for 16, 5 for 32.

How it works here

  1. Round 1 pairs the top half of the seeding against the bottom half.
  2. Every later round is paired when the previous round is complete, from the current standings. Pairing looks for the best fit across the whole field:
    1. No rematches, as long as any round without a rematch exists.
    2. The smallest gaps in points between opponents.
    3. As few pairings across score groups as possible.
  3. Byes. With an odd number of participants, one sits out each round. The bye goes to someone in the lowest score group, and nobody gets a second bye while someone else has not had one. A bye counts as a win.
  4. Rematches. If the field leaves no other option, a rematch is played and the match is marked "Rematch".
  5. Draws. A match can end level, and it is a draw, unless the stage's match tiebreak decides a winner. See Match formats.
  6. Finish. The stage can be finished once every configured round has been paired and completed.
Round 10-0 #1 vs #5 #2 vs #6 #3 vs #7 #4 vs #8Round 21-0 #1 vs #3 #2 vs #40-1 #5 vs #7 #6 vs #8Round 32-0 #1 vs #41-1 #2 vs #5 #3 vs #60-2 #7 vs #8After round 33-0 #12-1 #4 #2 #61-2 #5 #3 #80-3 #7Win: up one groupLoss: down one group
Players are numbered by seed. Each round pairs players on the same record, and nobody meets the same opponent twice while another pairing exists. The winner of each match is highlighted.

A match from a round that the next round was already paired from cannot be edited. To correct an earlier result, the organizer uses "Delete latest round", fixes the result, then uses "Pair next round" to continue. A round can only be deleted while none of its matches has a report or result, and round 1 cannot be deleted. Until "Pair next round" is used, no new round is paired. If disqualifications leave fewer than two players, no further round is paired.

Forfeits and disqualifications count as a loss for the side that conceded. Disqualified players are left out of later rounds and ranked last.

How standings and ties are decided

Standings are ordered by points first. A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 and a loss 0, unless the organizer set other values. A bye is worth a win.

Players level on points are separated by the stage's tiebreak chain, read in order. The default chain is:

  1. Buchholz (the sum of your opponents' points).
  2. Buchholz cut 1 (Buchholz without your weakest opponent).
  3. Match wins.
  4. Head-to-head (only between two players still level who met).

Players still level after the chain go by seed. The standings table shows a column for the first tiebreaker in the chain that has a value. Every option is explained in Tiebreakers.

Settings organizers choose

  • Number of rounds: leave empty for the suggested number.
  • Points per match: Win, Draw and Loss, each 0 to 100.
  • Tiebreak 1, 2, 3...: Buchholz, Buchholz cut 1, Median Buchholz, Match wins, Head-to-head, Opponents' match-win %, Game-win % and Opponents' game-win %.
  • Match format, Results entered as, optional map pool and veto. See Match formats.
